5 Signs You Have Termites in Your Wollongong Home

Wollongong and the broader Illawarra region sit in one of NSW's highest-risk zones for termite activity. The warm, humid coastal climate and surrounding eucalyptus forest create near-ideal conditions for Coptotermes acinaciformis — Australia's most destructive termite species. Yet most homeowners only discover termites once visible damage has already occurred, by which point the colony has typically been active for 12 to 18 months.

The good news: termites do leave signs. You just need to know what to look for. Here are the five most common warning signs found in Wollongong properties.

1. Mud Tubes on Foundations or Walls

Termites build pencil-width earthen tubes from the soil to the timber they're feeding on. These tubes protect them from light and moisture loss. You'll often find them running along the outside of your foundation, brick piers, concrete walls, or along timber beams in the subfloor. They look like thin brown streaks and are one of the clearest visible signs of subterranean termite activity.

Where to check: External foundation walls, internal subfloor piers and bearers (if you have a subfloor), and the exterior of any exposed brick or concrete walls below the floor line.

2. Hollow-Sounding Timber

Termites eat timber from the inside out, leaving only a thin external shell. Tap your skirting boards, door frames, window sills, and floorboards with your knuckle. Solid timber produces a dull thud — termite-damaged timber produces a hollow, papery sound. This is one of the most reliable DIY checks you can do.

In older Wollongong homes with hardwood floors or original timber window frames, this sign can reveal significant structural damage that isn't visible to the eye.

3. Blistering or Bubbling Paint

Moisture from termite workings builds up inside wall cavities and causes paint or wallpaper to blister, bubble, or peel — similar in appearance to water damage. Many Wollongong homeowners dismiss this as a plumbing issue or humidity problem without checking for the underlying cause.

If you see paint blistering in an area where there's no obvious water source, particularly on internal walls, treat it as a potential termite indicator until ruled out.

4. Discarded Wings Near Windows or Doors

When a termite colony is mature and conditions are right — typically in spring and after rain — it releases winged reproductives called alates, or "swarmers." These fly out to establish new colonies, then shed their wings almost immediately. Finding a pile of small, translucent wings near a windowsill, door frame, or light fitting is a strong sign that a termite colony has recently swarmed near or inside your home.

In Wollongong, swarming typically occurs between October and January. If you see discarded wings, contact a pest inspector promptly — the new colony, if established in your home, will have a 12-month head start before most homeowners notice anything else.

5. Tight-Fitting Doors or Windows

As termites damage the structural timber in door frames and window frames, the timber warps and distorts. Doors and windows that previously opened smoothly may become stiff, tight-fitting, or hard to close. This symptom is often attributed to seasonal swelling or building movement, but in a Wollongong home with no recent wet weather, it's worth investigating.

What to Do If You Spot Any of These Signs

The most important rule: do not disturb the area. Don't break open walls, spray the area with insecticide, or attempt any DIY treatment. Disturbing an active termite colony causes them to scatter deeper into the structure, making treatment significantly more difficult and expensive.

Call a licensed pest inspector immediately. A professional termite inspection covers all accessible areas of your property — subfloor, roof void, interior walls, and exterior perimeter — using moisture meters to detect hidden activity. Australian Standard AS 3660 recommends annual inspections for all properties in high-risk areas like Wollongong.
